유수부쟁선(流水不爭先)
<회남자(淮南子)>라는 책에 <유수부쟁선(流水不爭先)>이란 말의 근원이 나온다. 물론 老子에도 '상선약수(上善若水)'라는 비슷한 의미가 나오기는 하지마는, <회남자> 앞 부분인 원도훈(原道訓)의 문구가 더 가깝다.
<땅은 낮게 처하여 높이를 다투지 않기에 안정되어 위험한 법이 없다. 물은 낮은 곳으로 흐르면서 앞을 다투지 않기에 오히려 빨리 흐르고 지체하는 일이 없다.

결국 <유수부쟁선(流水不爭先)은 <수하류부쟁선(水下流不爭先)>이란 말을 약간 바꾼 것으로 보인다.
